Generative AI on Roblox: Our Vision for the Future of Creation
Beyond conversational AI and rapidly evolving art tools, it’s the way AI is moving into being a copilot for coding that grabs me the most. I don’t know how to code, and I’ve often found game creation tools, even ones like Sony’s Dreams on PlayStation, to be intimidating. But much more so than in any other capacity, it looks like a way to quickly enable complicated creations.
Roblox created Code Assist to help users turn their concepts into code they can embed within a metaverse space or object. Corazza demonstrated how natural language gets translated into code by using Code Assist to change the color of an orb to red and then destroy it 0.3 seconds after a player touches it and surround the first orb with a grid of other orbs. Referencing earlier code describing the first orb, Code Assist wrote code to add new orbs and adjust how it reacts to player interaction. The tool doesn’t work without other code to call on but can aid in filling in the details or at least more repetitive aspects of coding. Another ethical consideration is the potential impact of generative AI tools on traditional game development.

Last month, the company laid out its vision for ways generative AI can support user generated content (UGC). We will see people who before didn’t expect to be creators making immersive 3D experiences. And we’ll see the [experiences] that are created by developers become more rich and dynamic. So it’s really early, but we think it’s a really exciting frontier for 3D creation. With the Roblox Assistant, creators will be able to type in prompts to do things like generate virtual environments.
This is quite significant because the game has seen a plethora of users since its inception. In fact, the second quarter of 2023 marked 65.5 million active Roblox gamers, playing Yakov Livshits on daily basis. It has also tracked over 200 million active users a month, as of April 2021. We invite you to participate in the next jam dedicated to AI technologies!

That could make creation on the platform more accessible to creators without a lot of technical savvy and more powerful for creators who are already technical whizzes. Material Generator can be used by creators for creating high-quality textures to apply in-game towards objects. If you have experienced using other image generators, this will be very similar where users can select from a number of options and the AI will apply texture to the material by making it more realistic. Engadget reported that Code Assist and Material Generator are launched both in beta.

There are also reasons beyond economics that are compelling a number of large companies to adopt and run open-source models on their own infrastructure. They simply don’t want or cannot have their data—user input or system output—traveling through another company’s servers. There are compliance considerations as well as other legal and policy requirements that will make third-party models hard to adopt. We mentioned that we’re making really impressive gains in both quality and cost throughout our safety systems on all types of assets, which is live. Emerging intelligent analysis and review tools are supporting underserved beauty consumers with more accurate haircare recommendations.
By enabling third-party AI creation services to plug directly into Roblox, the company provides a mechanism for unique creations to be directly offered to Roblox users. The community would be a force multiplier for generative AI, creating an ecosystem that creators and users can leverage to create content and tools more effectively. There are many, many, many areas that we’re already live on the platform with ML and AI stacks and more to come. I want to highlight that we have 70 machine learning training stacks right now. We have trained, for example, our own translation model with one billion parameters. This is the model that helps auto-translate all experiences when a creator makes them.
Overall, Roblox’s generative AI tools represent a powerful and user-friendly way to create new content on the platform. By leveraging the latest advances in machine learning and AI, Roblox is empowering developers to create engaging and immersive game environments more quickly and easily than ever before. Corazza told GamesBeat that both material generation and AI code assist are the first steps of Roblox’s goal to become a creative tool for everyone. Both of these tools allow greater access to the building experience and can help existing developers become more productive. Meanwhile, the AI code assist will allow users to create code through natural language prompts. In addition to generating code, the tool can also automatically summarize users code to create comments.
Finally, we are working on using ControlNet to layer in predefined poses to guide the resulting multi-view images of the avatars. To enable everyone on Roblox to have a personalized, expressive avatar, we need to make avatars very easy to generate and customize. At RDC, we announced a new tool we’re releasing in 2024 that will enable easy creation of a custom avatar from an image or from several images. With this tool, any creator with access to Studio or our UGC program will be able to upload an image, have an avatar created for them, and then modify it as they like. Longer term, we intend to also make this available directly within experiences on Roblox. Given the fact that Roblox is so popular among millions of users, there is no telling how advanced the A.I.
The use of generative AI tools in game development is not entirely new, but Roblox’s implementation represents a significant step forward in terms of ease of use and flexibility. The new tools allow developers to quickly and easily generate a wide variety of content, from detailed structures to sprawling landscapes, with just a few clicks. This means that even solo developers or small teams can create highly polished and intricate game environments without spending significant amounts of time on tedious asset creation. Additionally, the ability to generate new content on the fly means that games can be more dynamic and offer more replay value, as new variations of the same game can be created almost instantly. Generative AI refers to the use of artificial intelligence algorithms to generate new and original content, rather than simply following pre-programmed rules or performing a fixed set of actions.
